In this interactive discussion session, we will discuss Art Spiegelman’s groundbreaking graphic novel through the lens of three questions: Why comics? Why mice? Why the Holocaust? In addition we will explore the graphic novel as a literary medium or genre. We expect participants to have read at least the first chapter of the first Part of Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, My Father Bleeds History. For those who would like to read more about the genre of the graphic novel before the session, we recommend reading Scott Mc Cloud’s On Understanding Comics: the Invisible Art.
After an introduction by Dr. Sara Polak, University Lecturer at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society, we will discuss how to introduce this book to secondary school learners of English. Catrin Cannock, teacher of English, will share some of her ideas.
DOEL & RESULTAAT
Deeper understanding of the graphic novel as a genre. Using the accessibility of this particular novel to open up discussions about controversial and sensitive content.

Lezing Bettina Wilpert
In deze lezing gaat Bettina Wilpert in op haar debuutroman Nichts, was uns passiert (2018).
„Anna sagt, sie wurde vergewaltigt. Jonas sagt, es war einvernehmlicher Geschlechtsverkehr. Aussage steht gegen Aussage. Nach zwei Monaten nah an der Verzweiflung zeigt Anna Jonas schließlich an, doch im Freundeskreis hängt bald das Wort „Falschbeschuldigung“ in der Luft. Jonas’ und Annas Glaubwürdigkeit und ihre Freundschaften werden aufs Spiel gesetzt.“

Bettina Wilpert (1989) studeerde Cultuurwetenschap, Engels en Literair Schrijven in Potsdam, Berlijn en Leipzig.
Doel & resultaat
Docenten Duits kunnen met hun leerlingen deelnemen aan dit digitale evenement. De leerlingen kunnen van tevoren het fragment lezen en hierover vragen voorbereiden. Zowel docenten als leerlingen worden van harte uitgenodigd om tijdens de bijeenkomst vragen te stellen aan de auteur.
