In this interactive discussion session, we will discuss Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel The Namesake by focusing on three main issues that are all connected, namely migration, identity, and the importance of names (especially Gogol). We expect participants to have read the entire novel (which is quite accessible and reader-friendly!).
After an introduction by Prof.dr. Peter Liebregts, Professor of Modern Literatures in English at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society, we will discuss how to introduce this book to secondary school learners of English. We invite everyone to bring forward ideas and suggestions for our group discussion.

Het ICLON en ONZ organiseren een vakdidactiekcafé voor moderne vreemde talen. Dit online café is gericht op startende docenten Engels, Frans, Duits of Spaans. Doel van de bijeenkomsten is om ervaringen, zorgen of tips uit te wisselen. Er is geen vast programma en je zorgt voor je eigen drankje achter je laptop. Na een korte inventarisatie van wensen bestaat eventueel de mogelijkheid om in break-out rooms aan te schuiven aan een tafeltje naar keuze. Je komt en je gaat naar eigen behoefte.
Doel & resultaat
Startende leraren ontmoeten ‘lotgenoten’ en er is ruimte voor intervisie. Waar gewenst en mogelijk kan de vakdidacticus zorgen voor aanvullende informatie of activiteiten. Mogelijk leidt het tot professionele netwerken van docenten.

In this interactive discussion session, we will discuss Art Spiegelman’s groundbreaking graphic novel through the lens of three questions: Why comics? Why mice? Why the Holocaust? In addition we will explore the graphic novel as a literary medium or genre. We expect participants to have read at least the first chapter of the first Part of Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, My Father Bleeds History. For those who would like to read more about the genre of the graphic novel before the session, we recommend reading Scott Mc Cloud’s On Understanding Comics: the Invisible Art.
After an introduction by Dr. Sara Polak, University Lecturer at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society, we will discuss how to introduce this book to secondary school learners of English. Catrin Cannock, teacher of English, will share some of her ideas.
